Q. Basically, in a nutshell, what are Copyrights?

Copyright Law is used to protect artistic works and other IP wherein someone has expressed their ideas on a tangible medium. Tangible mediums include art, photography, choreography, movies, music, writings, and software. The big difference between Patent Law and Copyright Law is that Patent Law protects the underlying ideas that make things work. Whereas, in Copyright Law, it is only the expression of ideas which are protected. For that reason, patents are typically seen as being far more valuable than copyrights.

Terms of Copyright Protection:

begins from the creation of the work + the Life of the Author + 70 Years after death
or
for situations with a Work for Hire (independent contractors or employees) :
120 years from creation of the work
or
95 years from first publication
(Whichever Longer)
